The DP World Lions claimed a 15 run DLS victory over World Sports Betting Western Province in their 1Day Cup opener at the DP World Wanderers Stadium on Saturday.
After Western Province won the toss and posted 259 for 7 in a rain shortened 42 over innings, the Lions replied with 245 for 4 in 36 overs, with the result decided by DLS.

Western Province’s total was built around a century from David Bedingham, who struck 103 off 93 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes. He shared in a strong early stand with Tony de Zorzi, who made 59 from 49 deliveries as the visitors advanced to 105 for 2 inside 15 overs.
The Lions fought back through the middle overs. Bjorn Fortuin was particularly economical, returning 2 for 39 in his 10 overs, while Nqaba Peter claimed 2 for 46.
Codi Yusuf also picked up two wickets to ensure Province were unable to fully capitalise on their platform.
Josh Breed added 43 not out, but regular wickets checked the late acceleration.
With rain intervening and the target adjusted, the Lions’ chase was anchored by Mitchell van Buuren.
The right hander finished unbeaten on 88 from 76 balls, striking three fours and three sixes, and controlled the tempo as the required rate climbed under DLS.
Zubayr Hamza provided early impetus with 46 from 38 balls, while Reeza Hendricks contributed 18 and Rassie van der Dussen made 15.
After slipping to 86 for 3, the Lions rebuilt effectively, moving to 169 for 4 before van Buuren and Connor Esterhuizen guided the side home. Esterhuizen’s unbeaten 39 from 29 balls ensured there were no late setbacks.
For Western Province, Beuran Hendricks returned figures of 1 for 51, while Kyle Simmonds was the most economical with 1 for 22 in eight overs.
However, the revised equation ultimately favoured the hosts, who managed the chase more efficiently to secure the 15 run win.
