Warriors Chase Down Target In 1day Cup Opener

The Dafabet Warriors produced a commanding batting performance to secure a six-wicket victory over the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their opening fixture of the 1Day Cup in Gqeberha on Friday.

After winning the toss, the Dolphins elected to bat first and posted a competitive 279/7 from 50 overs, built on a strong collective effort through the middle and lower order.

The Dolphins’ innings recovered well after early setbacks, with Slade van Staden (52 off 54 balls) and Marques Ackerman (52 off 58) laying a solid foundation through a crucial third-wicket partnership.

Khaya Zondo added a patient 39, before Hanu Viljoen anchored the latter stages superbly with a commanding 74 off 73 balls, striking six fours and two sixes.

Eathan Bosch chipped in with an unbeaten 23 off 19 balls to push the total towards the 280 mark.

Warriors’ bowlers kept things relatively tight, with Kerwin Mungroo and Aphiwe Mnyanda each claiming two wickets.

In reply, the Warriors showcased composure and firepower in equal measure, chasing down the target in 47.2 overs to finish on 283/4.

After a steady start from Matthew de Villiers (36) and Jordan Hermann (28), the chase was taken control of by Matthew Breetzke, who produced a sensational unbeaten 121 off 106 balls. Breetzke struck ten fours and four sixes, pacing his innings intelligently while maintaining consistent scoring pressure on the Dolphins attack.

Despite brief interruptions through the dismissals of JP King and Sinethemba Qeshile, the Warriors never lost control of the chase.

Patrick Kruger provided the perfect partner for Breetzke, blasting an unbeaten 85 off 77 balls, including six fours and four sixes, as the pair shared a match-defining partnership that carried the Warriors home with ease.

For the Dolphins, Jon-Jon Smuts was the standout bowler, finishing with 2/31 from 10 overs, while Ottniel Baartman claimed a wicket and bowled with discipline.

However, the Warriors’ acceleration through the middle and death overs proved decisive.

The result sees the Warriors begin their 1Day Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, while the Dolphins will look to regroup quickly as the competition gathers momentum.
