Day 1 Delivers Goals, Drama & Early Statements at the Indoor IPT

The 2026 South African Indoor Hockey IPT, powered by SPAR & Tops at SPAR, burst into life on Day One with emphatic victories, dramatic comebacks and early championship statements across both venues.

The A Section is being hosted at University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville, while the B Section action takes place at Thomas More College.

MEN – A SECTION

Southern Gauteng Send Early Warning

Defending champions Southern Gauteng wasted no time asserting themselves in Pool A, thrashing Northerns Daisies 14–1 in their opening fixture. Liam Hermanus delivered a remarkable eight-goal performance, supported by a brace from captain Dalpiarro Langford and further goals from JP Britz, Travis Krumples, Michael Horan and Marvin Simons.

They followed that up with a 7–2 victory over WP Peninsula. After a tight first half, Britz struck a third-quarter hat-trick to take control of the contest.

WP Peninsula had earlier secured what could prove a pivotal 2–1 win over NorthernsBlues, Dean Carrick and Corben O’Ryan scoring either side of Michael Kendall’s equaliser.

Northerns Blues responded strongly later in the day, defeating Northerns Daisies 9–1, with Jordan Calitz netting a hat-trick.

Western Province Show Championship Character

In Pool B, KZN Raiders delighted the home crowd with a 6–3 win over SG Witsiesafter racing into an early three-goal lead.

Western Province, the 2024 champions, were equally impressive in their opening fixture, dispatching KZN Mynahs 8–1. Hans Neethling scored four goals, with Idrees Abdulla adding a brace.

However, the match of the day came later when Western Province staged a remarkable comeback against SG Witsies. Trailing 4–0 early on, WP clawed their way back through Brett Horn, Ryan Julius and Kyle Esau before Neethling completed the turnaround with the decisive goal in the final four minutes to seal a dramatic 5–4 victory.

In the final men’s A Section fixture of the day, KZN Raiders secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory over KZN Mynahs in an intense all-KZN encounter.

A disciplined first half saw both sides locked at 0–0, with defensive structures dominating proceedings. The Raiders broke the deadlock in the third quarter as Daniel Freese, Dan den Bakker and Keegan Hezlett struck in quick succession to establish a commanding 3–0 lead.

The Mynahs refused to fade, with Praise Mgenge scoring twice to set up a tense finale. Despite late pressure, the Raiders held firm to claim the three points and round off a strong opening day in front of their home supporters.

WOMEN – A SECTION

Champions and Contenders Lay Down Markers

In Pool A, defending champions Western Province secured a comfortable 5–1 win over WP Peninsula. National captain Jamie Southgate led from the front, while Malikah Hamza netted twice in a strong second-half display.

KZN Raiders overcame an early scare against KZN Inland to win 6–1. After conceding in the opening minute, the hosts responded emphatically in the second half to take control of the match.

In Pool B, Southern Gauteng began their quest for a first title since 2019 with a convincing 6–1 win over SG Witsies, Amber Fairon producing a second-half hat-trick.

Northerns Blues delivered the most dominant performance of the day, overpowering Mpumalanga 14–0 with multiple hat-tricks and braces in a ruthless display.

MEN – B SECTION

KZN Inland A recorded a comprehensive 12–0 victory over Mpumalanga B, with Luke Barnard and Alex Warren both scoring hat-tricks.

Mpumalanga A responded in style in their own fixture, beating KZN Inland B 9–1 as they target a swift return to the A Section.

WOMEN – B SECTION

Northerns Daisies secured a solid 5–0 win over KZN Inland B to open their campaign.

KZN Mynahs delivered one of the standout scorelines of the day, defeating Mpumalanga B 13–0 in a commanding performance featuring multiple four-goal hauls.

Looking Ahead

With several statement wins, standout individual performances and a dramatic comeback already shaping the narrative, Day One has set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested IPT.

Further action continues tomorrow as teams battle for semi-final positioning across all sections.
