On June 15, the SPAR Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge team descended on Kingsmead High School in the leafy Rosebank suburb. The Hosts, Kingsmead High School welcome St Teresa’s, Midvaal, HS Alberton, Shumbas Hockey Club and local rivals, St Mary’s to their astro.
The SPAR Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge celebrated it’s 5th Challenge at Kingsmead College in 2023 as the hosts started the day’s pre-Father’s Day festivities against St Teresa’s with the crowd already gathering in the grand stand. Unusually mild weather for our visit to this venue meant the large trees lining the streets had not shed all their leaves yet and the field was shrouded in shadows for most of the morning.
During the water-break fathers were invited to participate in some hockey skills for some SPAR sponsored prizes to the applause of the daughters and family members who had come out to watch the day’s hockey.
The Challenge was played in a round robin format so that all teams got to face off against each other in a running time sequence of matches. The two dominant teams on the day met in the final match under the warmth of the highveld sun as St Mary’s polished performances and Alberton’s gutsy counter-attacking style clashed to see who would finish on top of the points table.
Match and awards photos have been loaded to the SPAR Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge Facebook page.
As always, we must thank SPAR for their generous sponsorship of the SPAR Hockey Challenge, providing snacks and goodies for all the players, support staff and umpires. A special thank you to our umpires who give tirelessly for the sport.
