Revamped Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e: More Power, Efficiency, and Range

Audi has rolled out a significant update to its plug-in hybrid A3 Sportback TFSI e, delivering more power, extended range, and cutting-edge technology. With a battery capacity nearly doubled, the car now offers an electric range of up to 143 kilometers, DC fast-charging capabilities, and enhanced efficiency to make everyday driving not just greener but also more exhilarating.

A Comprehensive Upgrade to a Plug-in Hybrid

Following a wave of improvements for the A3 and S3 models earlier this year, including the introduction of the A3 allstreet, the A3 Sportback TFSI e now joins the lineup with a significant technology upgrade. The new plug-in hybrid offers more power and efficiency than ever, combining dynamic handling with improved comfort.
A Powerful Duo: New Turbo Engine and Enhanced Electric Motor

At the heart of the upgrade lies a new turbocharged 1.5 TFSI evo2 engine, which replaces the previous 1.4 TFSI. With cutting-edge features like optimized combustion chamber cooling, a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, and a Miller cycle design, the new engine delivers higher compression (11.5:1 versus 10:1) for better fuel economy and lower emissions. The enhancements continue with a fuel injection system capable of pressures up to 350 bar, compared to the old 200 bar, and friction-reducing plasma-coated cylinder liners.

The electric motor has also been upgraded, now offering 85 kW and 330 Nm of torque. It works in tandem with a sturdier six-speed dual-clutch transmission that keeps things smooth even when switching gears with the engine off.

Doubling the Battery Capacity for Greater Electric Range

The A3 Sportback TFSI e now features a high-voltage battery with a gross capacity of 25.7 kWh, nearly double that of its predecessor. Thanks to advanced cell chemistry and optimized packaging, the car’s battery can store almost 50% more energy, increasing the electric driving range to up to 143 kilometers (WLTP cycle). A dedicated cooling circuit ensures the battery remains at an optimal temperature for performance and longevity.

Two Power Options: 40 TFSI e and 45 TFSI e

Audi offers the A3 Sportback TFSI e in two versions. The 45 TFSI e has a total system output of 200 kW (272 PS), allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 237 km/h. The 40 TFSI e delivers 150 kW (204 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, topping out at 225 km/h. Both models share the same electric top speed of 140 km/h.

Intelligent Drive Management: Efficiency Meets Performance

The plug-in hybrid’s intelligent drive system optimizes energy use by balancing the electric motor and combustion engine depending on speed, driving conditions, and selected mode. Whether coasting with the engine off, recuperating energy during deceleration, or providing extra boost during acceleration, the system ensures maximum efficiency. Drivers can prioritize electric driving using the EV button, while a hybrid mode smartly integrates both power sources.

Enhanced Recuperation and Boost Capabilities

Audi has fine-tuned the braking system for seamless energy recuperation. When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the car either coasts or regenerates energy depending on the situation. During braking, the electric motor can recover up to 43 kW of power before the hydraulic brakes engage.

For those moments when extra power is needed, the shift program S in “Auto Hybrid” mode unleashes the full potential of the drivetrain. The 45 TFSI e can deliver an extra 70 kW for up to eight seconds, while the 40 TFSI e provides a boost of up to 40 kW for up to 18 seconds.

Introducing DC Fast Charging and Expanded Charging Options

For the first time, Audi has equipped a plug-in hybrid with DC fast charging, enabling the A3 Sportback TFSI e to charge at up to 50 kW. This means you can go from a 10% to 80% charge in less than 30 minutes, perfect for longer trips. AC charging is also available, with three-phase charging at up to 11 kW, allowing the battery to recharge in just 2.5 hours. Audi’s charging service provides access to 630,000 charging points across Europe, including dedicated hubs in major cities like Berlin and Munich.

Specifically Tuned Chassis for a Balanced Ride

To accommodate the new lithium-ion battery, Audi adjusted the chassis tuning for a more balanced driving experience, resulting in a 55-45 weight distribution. The suspension features increased spring rates and sportier damping, providing both comfort and dynamic handling. Optional progressive steering adds to the car’s agility, making it easier to maneuver at low speeds while maintaining precision on the highway.

Sportier Looks and Premium Features in the 45 TFSI e

The 45 TFSI e comes standard with sportier styling, including the S line exterior, a bold radiator grille, and a roof-edge spoiler. Black styling accents and red brake calipers add to its aggressive look, while the interior features black sport seats, aluminum trim, and ambient lighting. Both models include 17-inch alloy wheels, Audi’s drive select dynamic handling system, and a host of digital displays to keep drivers informed about power usage, battery status, and range.

Ready for the Future of Hybrid Driving

With these updates, the Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e not only enhances performance but also makes plug-in hybrid technology more practical and enjoyable. Offering significant improvements in power, range, and charging flexibility, it sets a new benchmark for efficient, everyday driving that doesn’t compromise on excitement. Whether you’re commuting in the city or embarking on a weekend road trip, the A3 Sportback TFSI e has you covered, delivering sustainable driving without sacrificing the thrill.

The future of hybrid driving is here, and it looks electrifying.
