With a few scares in the match, Pukke saw off UJ 2-0 in the second round of the 2017 edition of Varsity Hockey, played at Maties in Stellenbosch, on Saturday afternoon.
In a tightly contested encounter, both sides found it difficult to exploit each other as the score was all square at 0-0 at half time. Pukke looked a touch more dangerous at the start of the second half and eventually broke the deadlock through a field goal by Courtney du Preez to make it 2-0 for the ladies from Potch, heading into the final chukka.
UJ piled on the pressure with the hope of maybe snatching a point from the game, but Pukke proved their worth by keeping UJ out. Goal keeper, Marine Kock, made sure her defence was spot on as there was no way through through for UJ.
It was a frantic finish as both teams left their Powerplays for the final five minutes and a number of players spent time on the sidelines with tempers flaring and green cards being dished out. But in the end that goal by Du Preez proved enough as Pukke hung on for a 2-0 victory to remain undefeated and move to the top of the log while UJ were left with two losses from two.
