First up on Saturday is a repeat of the Charity Shield.
Chelsea host Arsenal.
Of the English contingent, only Chelsea could manage a win in the Champions League this week but Arsenal fielded a second string team and Chelsea played Maccabi Haifa FC, hardly world beaters at any level.
@DirkVale Chelsea 1 – 1 Arsenal
@MarcelSigg Chelsea 1 -2 Arsenal
Result: Chelsea 2 – 0 Arsenal
Chelsea look horribly out of sorts despite the mid-week win and are struggling to score goals in England. Too good to write off completely but Arsenal are playing a very fast paced game, something out of form Chelsea seem to battle with of late.
@DirkVale Aston Villa 2 – 1 West Brom
@MarcelSigg Aston Villa 0 – 1 West Brom
Result: Aston Villa 0 – 1 West Brom
We both think West Brom will score one but can’t agree on where Villa’s goals will come from.
@DirkVale Bournemouth 0 – 1 Sunderland
A long shot for the underdog?
@MarcelSigg Bournemouth 1 – 0 Sunderland
Result: Bournemouth 2 – 0 Sunderland
Sunderland are dreadful. Bournemouth aren’t great but should be better than Sunderland.
@DirkVale Newcastle 1 – 0 Watford
@MarcelSigg Newcastle 1 – 1 Watford
Result: Newcastle 1 – 2 Watford
Watford have started well, Newcastle have not. Dirk believes this is the game for McClaren to turn things around. Marcel thinks the Geordies are ripe for the picking but concedes the misery can’t continue forever.
@DirkVale Stoke City 2 – 2 Leicester City
@MarcelSigg Stoke City 0 – 1 Leicester City
Result: Stoke City 2 – 2 Leicester City
We both admire Leicester’s fighting spirit but it’s usually only saved for the big opponents and for come-from-behind wins. Stoke are a difficult team to play and with new signings they are playing football associated with much better teams than you might expect. Leicester are all heart but start slowly, perhaps Vardy can get early goal and just for a change hold out the opposition.
@DirkVale Swansea 2 – 1 Everton
@MarcelSigg Swansea 2 – 1 Everton
Result: Swansea 0 – 0 Everton
Consensus at last! We both think Swansea are on top form and despite Everton’s fantastic display against Chelsea, we’re backing Shelvey, Ayew, Gomis and co to overcome the passing game plan of Martinez.
@DirkVale Man City 2 – 0 West Ham
@MarcelSigg Man City 1 – 1 West Ham
Result: Man City 1 – 2 West Ham
Two goals in the game. Yup but that’s all we agree on. West Ham are playing really well. New signings have had an instant impact. Vincent Kompany is injured and City are notoriously poor immediately after Champions League matches.
@DirkVale Tottenham 2 – 1 Crystal Palace
@MarcelSigg Tottenham 0 – 1 Crystal Palace
Result: Tottenham 1 – 0 Crystal Palace
Tottenham have started really slowly this season. Spurs have only scored 2 goals in a match once this season and Palace are playing attractive attacking football. Tough match to call we both think only one goal will separate the teams.
@DirkVale Liverpool 1 – 0 Norwich
@MarcelSigg Liverpool 1 – 1 Norwich
Result: Liverpool 1 – 1 Norwich
Both teams have 7 points at the moment and tradition would dictate an easy win at Anfield for the home team. However, nothing is as it should be at Anfield lately. Reports are emerging that Henderson and Sturridge could return for Liverpool this week. Marcel wonders if Sturridge would be satisfied playing left wing-back for BR?
@DirkVale Southampton 2 – 1 Manchester United
@MarcelSigg Southampton 0 – 2 Manchester United
Result: Southampton 2 – 3 Manchester United
Both teams are capable of the predicted scores. Dirk is a City fan and predicts a United loss every week. Marcel is a United fan and predicts a Manchester win every week. You’ll have to work this one out yourself.
