The Southern Stings, who have been among the top form teams in the 2017 Brutal Fruit Netball League, beat the Limpopo Baobabs by 60 goals to 36 in their round five match, at the Bellville Velodrome, Saturday afternoon. The Stings are vying for one of the semifinal spots and should know their fate after their last two matches against the Mpumalanga Sunbirds and North West Flames next week.
The Baobabs were the first to score, and were three-up before the Stings scored their first goal. For most of the first quarter, they surprised the Western Cape team, and were only two goals behind at the end of the quarter. The Stings pulled away from the Baobabs in the second quarter, and by halftime were 32 – 16 ahead, having allowed the Baobabs to score just six goals. In the third quarter, they scored 15 goals to 07 for the Limpopo side. The Baobabs fared better in the final quarter, with both teams scoring 13 goals each.
Their goal-shooter, Grace Lechaba, was solid under the post, and the team worked hard to get the ball to her, knowing she would almost always score. Stings coach Annelie Lucas had seized the opportunity to play some of her second string players, and was very happy with their performance. “It is almost time for the play-offs and we have to ensure that all players are fit enough ahead of this crucial time,” she said.
“Most of my players are versatile players and I was happy with the combinations tried today.” Baobabs coach Dumisani Chauke said she was pleased with the way her team had fought to the end, but I am concerned about injuries. “I was very pleased with Lechaba, who was shooting very well today, making every ball count. ” “I have two key players injured, but will have to take a risk with them going to the next match against Aloes. It is a must win game.”
