The South African Cross Country Series (SACCS) calendar for the remaining four events on this year has been finalised.
Two events, the Lichtenburg 400 in North West Province and the Battlefields 400 in KwaZulu-Natal for the Auto and Moto championships, have already been run with preparations in full swing for the next challenge, the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race based in Jwaneng, from June 23 to 25. The highlight of the season, the Botswana race is the only marathon event on the calendar with 60 championship points available over two heats for Auto and Moto contenders.
The Botswana race is followed by a new event on the calendar on July 28 and 29. The event will be hosted at the Eeram Farmers Complex, in the Free State with the venue conveniently situated 20 kilometres before Harrismith on the N3 to Durban.
“At this stage we don’t have any specific details regarding the course,” said route director Adri Roets. “I will shortly be doing a route survey but competitors can expect typical Highveld terrain.”
The penultimate round of the championship reverts once again to North West Province for the running on the Sun City 400 on September 15 and 16. The popular race, which was reinstated on the calendar last year, and won the Event of the Year accolade in 2016, offers cross country enthusiasts with a weekend away that combines national championship racing and leisure time at one of the world’s most popular holiday resorts.
The Sun City 400 will be for cars only with the curtain coming down on the Auto and Moto season at the Atlas Copco 400 with the event again based at the Kloof Country Club in Westonaria on October 27 and 28. The event is within easy reach of Johannesburg, Pretoria and major centres on the West Rand and will provide competitors with a tough end of year challenge.
