Round two of South Africa’s National Rally Championship is the Sasol Rally, taking place on Friday and Saturday, 11 and 12 April.
Hans Weijs Jnr and Björn Degandt got the season off to a strong start for the Volkswagen Sasolracing team when they claimed their first podium for 2014 at round one in KwaZulu-Natal. Weijs and Degandt maintained a strong and steady pace throughout that first event and made a successful return to the local rally scene.
The Sasol Rally is both a very popular rally for competitors and spectators alike as well as an extremely tough event on teams and their machines. The event takes place in Mpumalanga, in the Nelspruit, White River and Sabie areas with a combination of gravel and tar stages.
While a scenic event, the rally stages feature a high-speed layout which requires utmost concentration while the teams push their pace to claim honours.
For Henk Lategan the Sasol Rally will be a return to local competition after his foray into the European Rally Championships in Greece. Lategan tackled the Acropolis Rally in late March with German navigator Klaus Wicha. Lategan’s entry to the Sasol event will see him paired again with Barry White.
The 2013 season saw Lategan and White complete the Sasol Rally in fourth place overall in an event that featured extremely inclement weather, including heavy rain and thick mist.
Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin debuted in the S2000 class in their Volkswagen Sasolracing S2000 Polo at the KZN event, gaining valuable seat time in the process. The pair produced a best stage finish of fifth during the event and are eager to continue their national rally campaign.
