Yesterday the PUMA School of Speed at Dal Josafat Stadium saw outstanding performances from talented teenage High School athletes aiming to follow in the footsteps of PUMA School of Speed Principal, Usain Bolt.
The Western Cape track meet, the fourth of five PUMA School of Speed events to be held across the country in 2018, saw young athletes competing in sprint races as well as short hurdles, long jump and high jump. With a PUMA contract up for grabs the following athletes produced stellar performances in Paarl winning themselves premium PUMA spikes and Spur Steak Ranches vouchers.
Curwin Gertse of Paarl Gymnasium ran the U16 boys 110m hurdles in13.49sec
With Luciano Custodio of Paarl Boys High close behind, crossing the line in 13.79 seconds.
Hugo Mostert from HTS Drostdy ran the U16 Boys 100m sprint in 10.56sec
HTS Drostdy came out tops winning the trophy for Best Performing School on the Day.
PUMA Marketing Director Brett Bellinger says the series is all about encouraging participation in athletics, talent identification and rewarding performance excellence. “Well done to every single athlete brave enough to take to the track and to all the supporters for cheering them on. We hope to see just as much excitement at our final race day in Pretoria this coming weekend”
“Western Cape is a highly competitive athletics Province, we were confident that the day was going to be a great success,” says Stillwater Sports Managing Director, Michael Meyer. “We had 50 schools represented and over 850 participants cross the finish line on Monday. We are excited to finish off the series with a bang in a few days’ time at Bestmed TUKS.”
2017 PUMA School of Speed Vice Principal Henricho Bruintjies dropped by his old stomping ground to greet fans and delighted them with a 100m exhibition race to cap off a successful event.
The 2018 series will finish off on Saturday March 3 at the Bestmed TUKS Stadium, where School of Speed Vice Principal and PUMA Ambassador, Thando Roto is currently training.
