With Mike Ashley’s words still ringing around St James Park optimism is once again rearing its little head. He promised that Newcastle would once again start to challenge for higher honours and so far that promise has been kept.
Bringing in a manager of the highest calibre was of the utmost importance and Steve McClaren fits that bill more perfectly than any Englishman on the market can. Having won the FA Cup once, the League Cup once, the Champions League once, and Premier League not once but three, yes I said THREE times, he has shown himself that he is one of, if not, the best English Manager out there. However, his honours don’t stop there. He even lowered himself to the Eredivisie in Holland to prove that he has what it takes to manage in lower quality conditions. Not even the “Special One” can claim such success.
Taking a look at the playing staff that have arrived so far. Quick feet, a physical presence, a pass to rival Scholes and more creativity than Tolkien perfectly describes new midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum who will light up the league with silky touches, sublime finishes and a calmness that Newcastle sorely missed last season.
However, today’s footballers aren’t all about those silky touches and sublime finishes. They are a fashion statement, flashy boots, flashy tattoos and most importantly flashy hairstyles. Luckily Aleksandar Mitrovic is more than that, he is a finisher, a provider, and most importantly an entertainer.
Signing attacking players like Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic will see the club score a record number of goals as they head into their 5th straight Premier League campaign.
Football is not all about attack and that is where the 3rd summer signing comes in. How does one describe a player who is fast, strong, takes no nonsense and has no idea when his birth year is? Well, you would call him Chancel Mbemba, who is ready to single handily take charge of the Newcastle defence. Who needs old Argentinians or faulty Englishmen when you can have someone raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo! Coloccini and Taylor better watch out as there is a new boy on the block, and he doesn’t hand out favours.
It’s easy to forget, but there are another 2 new players who join up with the team for the first time, since their return loan to Nottingham Forest, in Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles. Two young players who are looking to stamp their mark in their first season as Premier League players, both will provide much needed competition as we wait to see who else the transfer maestro McClaren will bring in.
It is clear to me that Newcastle have taken a MASSIVE step in the right direction, with three magnificent signings and more to arrive soon it is clear they continue to show their desire to compete alongside the best teams in the league.
