Modderfontein Golf Club Review – December 2016

This course based in the East Rand of Johannesburg is a hidden gem. It is an unassuming place without the grandeur of many of the more prestigious courses in Johannesburg, but Modderfontein sneaks up on you in the most surprising way.

The Clubhouse is perched on a hill above the finishing holes and it has a wonderful view across the course. The Clubhouse has free wifi and all the usual fittings, including a new elevated deck off the main bar. Before you tee off they unusually ask you to choose your meal for halfway. We forgot to do this and they made the effort to track us down after 3 holes and take our order. True to form our food was ready, warm and waiting when we finished the ninth hole and it was delicious. We were in and out of halfway in record time and it made a really good impression. Much better than the grab and go setup at some other courses who try to get the players through the turn quickly. This is a great concept which other courses should adopt.

The course itself is also in fantastic condition. The greens and fairways were immaculate and it is a challenging layout. It is not a very long track, but it is a good test and a fun day out. Longer hitters can take a chance on a couple of holes and have a crack at getting home in one, but a little bit of local knowledge will help in selecting the right holes to have a go on.

Modderfontein Golf Club is a great day out. It is good value, a lovely track and really should be ranked as one of the best courses in Johannesburg. I suggest you let unassuming Modderfontein sneak up on you.

My scariest hole – Number 1 – par 5 – This stroke 18 par 5 is not long, but the tee shot is tight with a lot of perils. Next shot is a long one over a river to a tucked away green.

My favourite hole – Number 14 – par 3 – Probably because I played it well, but it is a picturesque hole with a river running across it.

Overall Experience rating by the Everyday Golfer: 9 out of 10.
