Mazda 2 1.5 DE Hazumi

Considered a little unlucky not to take the first prize at the Car of the Year by some, the Mazda 2 has received recognition from all quarters and we were really excited to get our hands on one.

The Hazumi is the range topping Mazda 2 and comes beautifully finished as standard with sporty accents. We particularly like the leather finishes on the dashboard, seats and steering wheel. The Hazumi is also very light on fuel, sipping only 4.4 / 100 km (claimed) when driven economically with Mazda’s unique on/off system in operation but equally willing, when prompted, to accelerate to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds via it’s very smooth 6 speed auto gearbox.

Beautifully crafted interior is well laid out and highly specced without cluttering the dash or steering wheel

The 7 inch display screen is perfect for navigation, managing the 6 speaker Bose audio system all while taking the hassle out of using your mobile device while on the move. We were particularly impressed with the ease of connecting the Bluetooth to a Samsung device. While driving around the outskirts of Pretoria, we even let the system read incoming emails to us. It was quite a pleasure having recognizable pronunciations.

It’s easy to see how driving this stylish Mazda 2 can provide you with hours of motoring pleasure

Making calls is also exceptionally easy via hassle free voice commands though scrolling the device is also possible with the centrally placed roller mechanism and intuitive push-click selection button. The scroller is also the key to the navigation system and options for just about all the other on-screen gadgets such as tuning the radio, settings for the cluster and more.

Handsome from every angle

The Mazda 2 is fitted with exceptional interior niceties but no doubt the design is a highlight. The Mazda 2 cuts an impressive outline, it is an attractive hatchback. The nose promises sportiness and road stance is provided by the handsome five spoke 16 inch alloy wheels.  It’s just a pleasure on the eye from every angle.

The Hazumi offers big car feel and finishes, and of course the auto box, in a compact car. Nothing beats an auto gearbox in difficult driving conditions and you’ll be grateful  for this calf-saver if caught in super slow moving traffic on our congested motorways. The self-shifting gearbox also manages to get the best fuel economy by shifting effectively and providing a smooth ride for all passengers.

Estimated range in the Mazda 2 is 1000 km if you can manage the claimed consumption from the 44 litre tank! Even if you motor along at 5, like we managed, you’re on target for 900km!

Features included as standard: six airbags, powered windows and folding mirrors, fog lamps in front, keyless entry and start, a trip computer, a six-speaker sound system with USB and auxiliary, Bluetooth as mentioned above, internet radio integration (Sticher, Pandora and Aha), ABS with EBD and EBA, steering wheel controls, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

If you’re in the market for a Diesel or a hatchback other than the hot hatches, the Mazda 2 must be on your test drive list.
