Maties 49-45 Kovsies
The Maties recorded only their second ever Varsity Netball victory over the Kovsies and also booked their Spot in the 2017 semi-finals courtesy of their 49-45 victory at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Monday night.
The hosts opened the scoring with two quick goals in front of a lively crowd but the two teams went toe-to-toe throughout the first quarter, with neither team managing to pull away on the scoreboard.
Whenever the Maties went ahead, Kovsies kept within touching distance and the scoreboard difference was never more than two goals in favour of the hosts. The visitors had the final say of the quarter and led for the first time when they made it 11-10 after a pulsating first 15 minutes.
Maties again were first to score when the action resumed and the teams continued to trade goals, with the Kovsies leading by two at 17-15, before the Maties finished the quarter strongly to make it 19-19 at the break.
The Kovsies started the stronger of the two teams after halftime and Maties coach Zanele Mdodana then used the power play to ensure her charges kept the pressure on the Kovsies. Despite trailing by three goals late in the quarter the ladies in maroon kept their composure and fed off the incredible energy provided by their fans to make it 31-31 after three quarters.
It was tense and tight when the final quarter resumed and both teams were looking to land the knockout blow at 38-38. The power play was called by Kovsies coach Burta de Kock and both teams scored twice, with Kovsies leading 44-43 after the two minutes had ended. Maties drew even and at 45-45 the match was still in the balance.
Showing that they had learned valuable lessons in their two previous heart breaking losses the Maties then closed out the game, scoring four late goals to win 49-45 and book their place in the knockout stages.
