Marais, Brown and Ho ready for Sanlam Cape Mile rematch

Grabouw (Western Cape) – Swimming sensations Danie Marais, Myles Brown and Chad Ho will return to the scenic town of Grabouw on Sunday, 07 February 2016 where they’ll battle it out for the title of Sanlam Cape Mile Champion.

The inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile held earlier this year was action packed with Marais, Brown and Ho swimming neck on neck for the duration of the race.  In the end it was an exciting sprint finish between Marais and Brown that saw Marais reaping the rewards.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd support,” said Marais.  “I really didn’t expect an event to be that well supported in its first year.  This is really good for the future of the sport.  It was an honor to be crowned the first champion.  I am excited to take part again in 2016 and am sure that this will become the largest open water swim in South Africa.   My goal is to secure the title for the second consecutive year.”

For Brown, the Sanlam Cape Mile was an awesome experience.  “The event was well organized and hosted at a beautiful venue,” said Brown.  “It was a great experience and I had a good time.  I was pipped to the finish by Danie.  Although I always try to have a good time and enjoy an event, I must admit that reaching the finish first in 2016 would be really cool.”

According to Ho the Sanlam Cape Mile had an upbeat vibe.  “The music playing in the background along with the great weather made for a very good day out.  It’s a fun event to partake in and the scenery is really beautiful.  Although my goal will be to win, I am also a really big foodie.  The food at the Sanlam Cape Mile was really good, that’s always a plus for me.”

Johan van der Merwe, non-executive director at Sanlam Investments, added, “as Wealthsmiths we understand what it takes to work hard and ensure that we do things very, very well.  Therefore, it is important that the event is of the highest standard and, at the same time, attract the top swimmers from around the country.”

The Sanlam Cape Mile is an exciting open water swim.  Entrants can choose between an exhilarating mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.
