The season is quickly becoming one of the best in a long time. The title looks to be Chelsea’s to lose but the other 5 positions, and critically the other top 3 slots, are all still up for grabs. This week, we’re predicting our Fantasy Football results in the shadow of City and Arsenal’s European demise and Leicester’s resurgence. Remember Gawie? Gavin Harrison is back to defend his win in the Christmas week, although strangely we can’t find the HarrisEffect in our Fantasy Football league anymore .. and for that reason Gavin harris gets pink.
Gawie: WBA 1 – 2 Arsenal
Arsenal need this result to keep pace with the top four. West Bromwich won’t be able to keep my boys out
Dirk: West Brom 1 – 2 Arsenal
West Brom seem content to stay on 40 points now that they’ve reached their target. Even though Arsenal look like the team mostly likely to miss out on the Champions League out of the current top 6, this is a very winnable game. There is the FA Cup and European football left to play for, and a win here could start a well-needed revival. If they lose, suddenly Everton will look threatening in 7th.
Marcel: WBA 0 – 1 Arsenal
The gunners aren’t the team they were 6 months ago, but then WBA aren’t the team they were 3 months ago and look like they’ve achieved their season target of 40 points. With relegation avoided they are all at sea. A moment of individual brilliance might get Arsenal the points, perhaps one of the stars looking to move on with the uncertainty surrounding Wenger will do the job.
RESULT: WBA 3 – 1 Arsenal
Gawie: Crystal Palace 2 – 1 Watford WP
Big Sam finally has his team playing to his tune. Watford seem to be stagnating in my opinion.
Dirk: Crystal Palace 2 – 2 Watford
Palace have finally found some shape, and getting something out of the squad. A squad with some obvious skills. Watford seem to be pottering a long with some moments of brilliance. Difficult to say which Watford will be out in action here. I think this could well be an entertaining high scoring game! A draw in the end for me though.
Marcel: Crystal Palace 1 – 0 Watford WP + MP
Watford are another team who go to Christmas somewhat ahead of their own expectations and then just plopped on the sofa and stuffed their faces with cream pies and lager. I stand corrected but only the win over Arsenal away in 2017? Palace need the points more, and should go out there and take them.
RESULT: Palace 1 – 0 Watford
Gawie: Everton 2 – 0 Hull City WP
Toffees should see this through. Hull will be without their on loan Toffees striker. Lukaku wants to promote himself to other clubs so he’ll play hard.
Dirk: Everton 2 – 1 Hull City WP
Hull are surprisingly still fighting for survival and an excellent managerial change could see them surprising us all and staying up! Everton aren’t far off the top 6 and at home will be looking to get another 3 points to stay in the hunt for 6th. I think they’ll get the points their looking for, hopefully for them Lukaku not signing a new deal doesn’t prove too big a distraction.
Marcel: Everton 1 – 0 Hull City WP
The revival at Hull has been great for football in general. Some proper Roy of the Rovers stuff and great fight displayed to keep the Tigers up but Everton, even though horribly inconsistent at times, should be far too strong and organised to cede points to Hull. Stanger things happen, though.
RESULT: Everton 4 – 0 Hull City
Gawie: Stoke 1 -3 Chelsea WP
Only one winner here unfortunately
Dirk: Stoke City 1 – 1 Chelsea
I know Chelsea should win here but I got a feeling they’ll be happy with a draw to maintain their lead at the top of the table. Stoke in decent form and are always a tough ground to visit. Draw for me.
Marcel: Stoke City 0 – 2 Chelsea WP
I think Dirk and I both have a soft spot for Stoke but I can’t see any result but a Chelsea win here. With no distractions and the luxury of a 10 point lead there is no pressure and the flair players will be able to play with creative freedom.
RESULT: Stoke 1 – 2 Chelsea
Gawie: Sunderland 1 – 1 Burnley WP
Sunderland is still in trouble. Burnley are trying to win away from home. Played well against Liverpool.
Dirk: Sunderland 1 – 0 Burnley
If only Burnley could get points away from home! Good thing for Sunderland who desperately need the points to maintain any hopes of staying up. I think it’ll be a tough, old school Premier League game with the odd goal separating the two sides. Dafoe to score because that’s what he does.
Marcel: Sunderland 1 – 0 Burnley
It’s a simple as Burnley can’t pick up points away from home. If you saw the Liverpool Burnley game you’d know that even a goal up and probably the better side in the first half, Burnley just don’t have any intensity about them away from home. That said, the atmosphere at Anfield disappointing.
RESULT: Sunderland 0 – 0 Burnley
Gawie: West Ham United 1 – 1 Leicester
West Ham should just do enough to frustrate a resurgent Leicester
Dirk: West Ham 2 – 1 Leicester
Leicester having a swan song in the Champions League and find themselves in the Quarters. I think they’ll have their minds on that game in this game. West Ham are improved and should get all three points at home, especially if Carroll is fit.
Marcel: West Ham 0 – 2 Leicester City WP
West Ham have not won any of their last 4 matches and Leicester, a head coach lighter, are on a roll. Wins against Liverpool, Hull and Sevilla definitely going to be followed by another against stuttering West Ham.
RESULT: West Ham 2 – 3 Leicester City
Gawie: Bournemouth 1 – 1 Swansea
These two should cancel each other out unless Gylfi has other plans but they can’t rely on him all the time.
Dirk: Bournemouth 2 – 1 Swansea WP
Swansea’s resurgence has hit some problems, and the Cherries come back against West Ham will mean the Cherries will have a swagger and at home this could be the difference. Cherries to win here for me.
Marcel: Bournemouth 1 – 1 Swansea
Since winning both their away games in January, Swansea have succumbed to City and Chelsea and lost narrowly to Hull on their travels. Bournemouth aren’t anywhere near as sharp as two of the three above but are quite solid at home so I’m picking the easy way out, draw.
RESULT: Bournemouth 2 – 0 Swansea
Gawie: Middlesbrough 0 – 1 Manchester United WP
Middlesbrough fired their manager today. United will still be too much even without Ibrahimovic, Rooney and Herrera.
Dirk: Boro 1 – 1 Man United
The draw specialists against a United side lacking upfront. I think it’ll be a frustrating draw for United as their lack of penetration shows. Boro’s lack of wins might prove to be their down fall this season.
Marcel: Boro 0 – 1 Manchester United WP
It’ll be the same as many other games featuring United this season. One way traffic but only one goal from a bucket-load of chances keeping the hosts interested and the Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea fans entertained on twitter.
RESULT: Boro 1 – 3 Manchester United
Gawie: Tottenham 2 – 2 Southampton.
Hoping for a tight game. Southampton have a free scoring striker while Spurs are without theirs.
Dirk: Spurs 2 – 1 Southampton WP + MP
With Kane out Spurs will be missing something that’s for sure. I think the rest of the squad will step up here, especially at home, and do enough to see off the Saints. It’ll be an interesting game with Gabbiadini in excellent form, but there should be enough about Spurs to get all 3 points.
Marcel: Tottenham 1 – 2 Southampton
I watched spurs win by 6 in the FA Cup against Millwall and thought Son was absolute rubbish despite scoring a hat-trick. If Southampton bring their EFL Cup Final form to this fixture sloppy first touches will be punished rather than rewarded with the match ball. Perhaps Jansen or Ericsson play up front in Kane’s absense but upset away win for me.
RESULT: Spurs 2 – 1 Southampton
Gawie: Manchester City 2 – 2 Liverpool. WP
Will be a tough game. City have to make up for their poor effort in the Champions League. Liverpool might find this tough.
Dirk: Man City 2 – 0 Liverpool
No doubt the most interesting game of the weekend. Liverpool looked lack lustre and were very fortunate to beat Burnley at home. Traveling to City with City in the form they are in, it has to be City taking all the points in this fixture!
Marcel: Manchester City 0 – 2 Liverpool
I wonder if Pep ever thought he could sign for a club with unlimited resources, who had already spent almost a billion Pounds in less than 10 years and just walk to trophies like he had in Spain and Germany. I wonder if he has realised it’s not going to be that easy. Monaco will have come as a shock. And traditionally City lose the first league game after a European match. Klopp will be licking his chops in anticipation of another top 6 opponent win.
RESULT: City 1 – 1 Liverpool
