22 March, 2014 Pretoria – Liqui Moly Legends launched their 2014 racing calendar with a
spectacular show at Zwartkops Raceway, just outside Centurion in Pretoria.
Thursday’s practise set the tone with former short oval ace Seef Fourie and V8 supercar veteran
Franco Di Matteo setting the early pace with low 1.14’s around Zwartkops. 2013 Champion Devin
Robertson seemed to be lacking pace but by late afternoon on Friday he had posted a quick 1.13.9.
The scene was set for some close and fast racing!
On Saturday the Legends ran three heats through the day that were unquestionably the highlight of
the day’s racing extravaganza. Seventeen cars lined up on the grid with several new-comers to racing
alongside seasoned pros like Devin Robertson, Seef Fourie, Franco Di Matteo, Jason Wessels and AJ
In the typical Legends process the starting positions taken from a ballot draw which put 2013
masters champion Johann Van der Venter on pole alongside superbike ace Allann Jon Venter. Much
of the focus was on the second and third rows of the grid where Robertson and Di Matteo had
drawn the 3rd and 4th grid slots with Fourie just behind on the third row alongside Legends newcomer
Llewellyn Myberg. A first lap mistake at turn 5 saw AJ Venter run wide in the Red Star
Raceway Ford which allowed Robertson to pounce early and take the lead ahead of the hard
charging duo of Fourie and Di Matteo who treated the Zwartkops crowd to a fantastic display of
Legends action which ended with Fourie’s Karcher Dodge coupe crossing the line ahead of the Rock
Raceway Ford sedan of Di Matteo by a mere 100th of a second.
In the second heat, Shaun Nel who had drawn the number 16 grid position for heat one started on
pole as the positions were reversed. A turn one skirmish on the opening lap of the first heat bent the
rear axle which spoilt his day, finishing the heat in 11thplace. Shaun’s troubles continued as he fought
a badly handling car to finish 8th in the third heat on a frustrating day for the 2013 Championship
Man of the moment Devin Robertson showed great pace in all three heats with the likes of Fourie
and Di Matteo pushing him all the way to the flag.
Local pop singer Nicholis Louw enjoyed a successful first outing in his Liqui Moly sponsored car,
finishing 12th, 9th and 14th respectively in the three heats. Nicholis showed some good pace on the
new rubber and will no doubt improve as the season progresses.
Outstanding performance of the day was delivered by Lonika Maartens racing in the Young Lions
category at age 14. Lonika improved with every outing and managed a top 10 finish in race 3. Keep
an eye on this young lady, she is going places!
The Legends Racing show moves to Red Star Raceway for the next event on the 12th of April 2014. Be
sure to get your tickets to what is proving to be an outstanding day out for the family. The Red Star
Raceway has a beautiful pool and picnic area for all to enjoy a day out when not watching the on
track action, of course. There will be loads of activities for the kids and loads of prizes to be won.
