Kalahari Desert All-tar Speedweek

Speeding along the longest runway in the Southern Hemisphere at speeds other motorists or bikers would get locked up for, is every petrolhead’s dream.  Dream no more.

The organisers of the first Kalahari Desert Speedweek, which was held in September of 2012 at Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape, have come to an agreement with the authorities at the Upington International Airport to set aside the runway from Sunday April 28 to Tuesday April 30 2013 for speedfreaks to do their thing legitimately.

Said organiser Jan Els at the announcement of the Kalahari Desert All-tar Speedweek: “You can’t miss this one.  Anybody and everybody is welcome, as long as you register before the event.”

Visitors will also be allowed to come and watch the action.

The organisers will be able to time 140 runs during the three days set aside for this great speed bonanza.  Each participant will receive a commemorative certificate with an action photograph and the driver’s/rider’s fastest speed displayed on it. In addition he or she will also receive a Kalahari Desert All-tar Speedweek metal badge, once again engraved with his/her maximum speed.

Various hotels and B&B facilities operate in Upington and the surrounding area.  Google Upington accomodation for more information regarding available facilities.
