A landmark evening for Dayaan Cassiem ultimately ended in disappointment for South Africa as Ireland produced a devastating final-quarter surge to claim a 4-1 victory in their second Pool C encounter at the FIH Hockey Men\u2019s World Cup in Wavre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The match carried special significance for the South African captain, who stepped onto the international stage for the 100th time, reaching a milestone almost a decade after making his senior international debut as an 18-year-old.<\/span><\/p>\n

After both sides suffered 3-1 defeats in their opening matches, the encounter carried significant importance and the opening half reflected that tension. Neither team was able to find the breakthrough through the opening 30 minutes as the two sides largely cancelled each other out.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was South Africa who finally broke the deadlock seven minutes after the restart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kenton Melville found the opening in the 37th minute, finishing <\/span>a <\/span>contendor<\/span> for goal of the tournament when his acrobat deflection<\/span> handed <\/span>the South Africans a deserved 1-0 advantage and provide a platform from which to push for a vital first victory of the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lead, however, lasted just five minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ireland responded through Benjamin Walker \u00a0to restore parity before taking control of the contest in the final quarter. Experienced defender Lee Cole proved decisive from the penalty corner battery, converting in the 48th minute to give Ireland the lead before striking again from another penalty corner seven minutes later.<\/span> It was a massive moment in the game as South Africa had just been awarded a penalty stroke only for the call to be reversed on referral. <\/span><\/p>\n

With South Africa forced to chase the game, spaces inevitably opened and Ireland took advantage once more in the closing stages. Sam Hyland added a fourth from open play to complete a scoreline that was considerably more comfortable than the contest had appeared for much of the afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

For South Africa, the frustration will come from seeing a match in which they had worked themselves into a winning position rapidly slip away. From leading 1-0 with 18 minutes remaining, the Africans conceded four times in the closing stages as Ireland ruthlessly seized the momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n

The defeat means South Africa are now unable to progress into the second round of the championship phase, with Australia already on six points and Ireland and Spain both on three. South Africa will instead move into the 9th-16th classification phase following the completion of Pool C.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is, however, still one significant Pool C challenge remaining. South Africa conclude the opening phase against Australia on Thursday, 20 August at 11:00, providing another opportunity to test themselves against one of world hockey\u2019s leading nations and build momentum ahead of the classification matches.<\/span><\/p>\n
