South Africa opened their FIH Hockey Nations Cup campaign in front of a proud home crowd at <\/span>Hartleyvale<\/span> Stadium in Cape Town on Thursday evening, taking on France in a thrilling opening-day contest.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a day when South African sport stood firmly in the spotlight, with Bafana Bafana beginning their FIFA World Cup journey, <\/span>Hartleyvale<\/span> provided another reminder of the country\u2019s ability to host world-class sporting occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The evening was also a special one for Jared Cass and Kenton Melville, who both earned their senior international debuts for South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

France started brightly and won an early penalty corner, but South Africa successfully referred the decision. The hosts then created their first meaningful circle entry through debutant Melville, while goalkeeper <\/span>Cullin<\/span> de Jager was called into action at the other end to keep France out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The visitors struck first through <\/span>Corentin<\/span> Sellier, who finished well to give France the lead. South Africa responded in style, with Melville marking his debut with a memorable goal, deflecting home after a superb run from Dayaan Cassiem.<\/span><\/p>\n

The home crowd was then sent into celebration when South Africa took the lead through a flowing team move, finished brilliantly by Carlon <\/span>Mentoor<\/span> just under the crossbar. With momentum behind them, the African Champions went into half-time 2-1 ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

France lifted their intensity after the break and placed South Africa under sustained pressure. De Jager stood tall in goal, producing a number of important saves, but the French pressure eventually told when Victor <\/span>Charlet<\/span> fired home from a penalty corner to level the match at 2-2.<\/span><\/p>\n

South Africa almost restored their lead on the counterattack, but the chance was lifted over the target, leaving the teams level heading into the final quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n

An early green card for South Africa in the final period added to the pressure, and De Jager again produced a superb double save from a French penalty corner to keep the scores level. With seven minutes remaining, however, <\/span>Charlet<\/span> struck again from a penalty corner variation, with his goal-bound effort eventually crossing the line.<\/span><\/p>\n

A late penalty stroke allowed <\/span>Charlet<\/span> to complete his hat-trick and seal a 4-2 victory for France.<\/span><\/p>\n

South Africa will take plenty of heart from a committed performance, with two debutants making their mark and the home crowd playing its part in a memorable opening night at <\/span>Hartleyvale<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
