{"id":4610,"date":"2025-06-10T19:42:49","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T17:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.runridedive.com\/?p=4610"},"modified":"2025-06-10T19:43:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T17:43:22","slug":"4610","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.runridedive.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/10\/4610\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 South African BMX Freestyle Champions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Park Lines BMX Tournament, the official\u00a0<strong>2025 BMX Freestyle South African Championships<\/strong>, took place over the weekend. The event, sanctioned by Cycling South Africa and UCI, was presented by\u00a0<strong>LW Mag<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dragon Energy\u00a0<\/strong>in association with\u00a0<strong>Garmin<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Balwin Properties, Insta360, Fox Racing and Mongoose. Vincent Leygonie reclaimed his title in the Pro Men\u2019s category\u00a0while\u00a0Jenna Byrnes defended her title in the Pro Women\u2019s category.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The competition took place at the newly built SkyLab Skatepark at the Joxi-X Adventure Park in Bryanston, Johannesburg.\u00a0<\/strong>The park offered riders a variety of obstacles and line choices to showcase their skills in their bid to impress the judges through the qualifying rounds and the finals<\/p>\n<p>Riders from all over South Africa competed in the Amateur and Pro divisions\u00a0as\u00a0judges\u00a0took use-of-park, amplitude, execution, trick variety and difficulty\u00a0into account\u00a0when scoring the riders\u2019 runs.\u00a0The\u00a0Pro\u00a0riders\u00a0not only competed for South African rankings but also their share of the\u00a0R36\u00a0500.00\u00a0prize purse and Garmin Instinct 3 Smartwatches.\u00a0The winner of\u00a0Amateur\u00a0division took home a new Mongoose BMX\u00a0with\u00a0the other podium finishers winning prizes from Fox Racing.\u00a0The new Insta360 X5 360\u00ba action camera was up for grabs for the Best Trick award.<\/p>\n<p>Through the qualifying\u00a0rounds\u00a0riders had two heats (45 seconds per heat for Amateurs and one minute for pros)\u00a0with\u00a0both runs counting towards their overall score.\u00a0In the finals,\u00a0again\u00a0two\u00a0heats, but\u00a0with\u00a0the best run\u00a0counting\u00a0as their overall score.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Header Image: Pro Women&#8217;s winner Jenna Byrnes \u00a9 Eric Palmer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Amateur Division<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The biggest division of the day saw new up-and-coming riders enter to compete, as well as some old faces\u00a0make\u00a0their return to competition.\u00a0This\u00a0adding\u00a0to the development and growth of the sport locally, and\u00a0was\u00a0a treat to witness how the riders progressed throughout the day.\u00a0Eight riders qualified\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0finals\u00a0where Park\u00a0Lines\u2019\u00a0new comers\u00a0would claim the podium positions.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Town\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Stefan Heynes<\/strong>\u00a0impressed the judges with his array of tricks\u00a0through\u00a0the course to slot himself into 3rd place.\u00a0Having learned Backflips just two days before the\u00a0contest\u00a0Heynes did a Backflip on the Box Jump to land his first in\u00a0competition.<\/p>\n<p>New to the sport of BMX Freestyle,\u00a0<strong>Sinjin Caromba<\/strong>\u00a0used\u00a0his BMX Racing background to flow through the park with speed and style, linking together transfers that no other rider in the division\u00a0was doing.\u00a0That\u00a0paired with big\u00a0360\u2019s, a Nac Nac and Tyre Grab over the big\u00a0box\u00a0earned him 2nd place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean Fulton<\/strong>\u00a0made use of the\u00a0full\u00a0park and included tricks on almost every obstacle. His 360 over the box jump, Table Tops and Toboggan on the quarter pipes, Truck Driver over the big box, Turndown transfer and 360 over the spine put him ahead of his competitors to take 1st place. The win will see Fulton advance to the Pro Division next year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Pro Division<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jenna Byrnes<\/strong>\u00a0was the only female competing in the\u00a0<strong>Pro Women\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0category and still holds the record for the only female to land a Backflip in South Africa.\u00a0In this year\u2019s\u00a0competition\u00a0she showcased her progression by\u00a0including\u00a0a Backflip,\u00a0Turndown, 360 and Barspin into her run to be crowned the 2025 South African champion.<\/p>\n<p>The always exciting\u00a0<strong>Pro Men\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0category saw 15 riders competing for their chance\u00a0of earning\u00a0valuable UCI points and official SA ranking by qualifying\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0eight rider\u00a0final.<\/p>\n<p>Having qualified in 2nd place,\u00a0<strong>Malcolm Peters<\/strong>\u00a0took to the course in the finals\u00a0but\u00a0mistakes in both runs would see him finish in 5th place.\u00a0<strong>Francois\u00a0Bodenstien<\/strong>\u00a0known for his technical tricks and use of\u00a0park\u00a0put in a\u00a0good\u00a0effort to finish in 4th place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nkosinathi Nkosi<\/strong>\u00a0turned it up in the finals, utilising the full park with flowing and stylish runs.\u00a0His tricks included a 360 Turndown over the big box,\u00a0360\u00a0Toboggan over the box,\u00a0360\u00a0over the spine,\u00a0Fakie\u00a0to 360 Cab\u00a0and\u00a0Turndown\u00a0on the quarter pipe, which earned him 3rd place.<\/p>\n<p>Making a statement in his first run in the\u00a0finals\u00a0<strong>Morgan O\u2019Kennedy<\/strong>\u00a0put down a solid run\u00a0making\u00a0use of the full minute run with a 360 over the big box, Turndown over the box, Flair on the quarter pipe, 180 Barspin to 180 out on the box, Tuck No-Hander transfer, Tailwhip and Tuck No-Hander on the quarter pipes.\u00a0The\u00a0run\u00a0scored enough points\u00a0for\u00a02nd place overall.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to reclaim his South African Championship title,\u00a0<strong>Vincent Leygonie<\/strong>\u00a0went all-in in the finals. With a few mistakes in his first\u00a0run\u00a0it all came down to the final run of the day. Not letting the pressure get to him, Leygonie took to the course to lay down the best run of the day, landing tricks on every obstacle of the course. The run-down of his tricks included a transfer Tuck No-Hander, Backflip Tuck No-Hander over the big box, Toboggan on the quarter pipe, Truck Driver to X-Up on the box, 360 Toboggan over the big box, Can Can on the quarter pipe, Truck Driver over the spine, Nac Nac transfer, Tailwhip on the quarter pipe, reverse 360 over the box, opposite Turndown on the quarter pipe and a Flair on the quarter pipe. The run scored the highest points of the day and saw Leygonie crowned the 2025 South African champion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insta360 Best Trick Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The day ended\u00a0off\u00a0with the\u00a0<strong>Insta360 Best Trick Competition<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0saw\u00a0huge\u00a0battle go down between\u00a0<strong>Malcolm Peters<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Vincent Leygonie<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0bragging\u00a0rights.\u00a0Leygonie started it off with a CashRoll over the big box \u2013 having landed it with a slight bobble, he spent the rest of the\u00a030 minute\u00a0jam session\u00a0trying\u00a0land it clean but was unsuccessful.\u00a0In the closing\u00a0minutes\u00a0Malcom\u00a0Peters landed a Backflip Double Tailwhip over the big box, a first for him, claiming the Best Trick of the day and the Insta360 X5 360\u00ba action camera prize.<\/p>\n<p>Park Lines\u00a0organiser,\u00a0Ryan van der Spuy says,\u00a0<em>\u201cThis was the fifth edition of the Park Lines BMX Tournament\u00a0and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0extremely\u00a0proud of what we have been able to accomplish through this tournament.
