Great Britain\u2019s Kate Waugh and L<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>o Bergere of France won the 2023 Super League Triathlon Championship Series titles in NEOM, Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The women\u2019s race saw Waugh, 24, finishing ahead of Luxembourg\u2019s Jeanne Lehair and France\u2019s Emma Lombardi on the day and in the Series after a dramatic multi-stage triathlon in the desert.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Waugh may have been the overall Series champ, France\u2019s Cassandre Beaugrand was the day\u2019s leading female athlete, crossing the line ahead of Waugh and Lehair to secure points for her Bahrain Victorious Scorpions team.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four-date Series victory (following races in London, Toulouse, Malibu and now NEOM) sees Waugh add the 2023 Super League Championship Series to her Under-23 and Mixed Relay world titles from 2022. She finished level on points with Lehair but with the final result counting in the event of a tie took the title.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into today\u2019s last round, my legs felt so heavy coming out of the swim, so I kept having to tell myself how badly I wanted to win this,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0said an elated Waugh at the finish after securing a\u00a0<\/b>considerable<\/b><\/span>\u00a0chunk of the $1.24m prize pot.\u00a0<\/b>\u201cMy form was gone in the last 400m of the final run, but I\u2019m absolutely over the moon [with the series win].\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The men\u2019s race would follow soon after, witnessing Bergere break free from defending champion New Zealand\u2019s Hayden Wilde on the final run leg to take both the Series and race win. The duo, both vying for the overall title of the four-date 2023 Series, were inseparable on the first eight disciplines of the day before Bergere, 27, applied a Short Chute in the final transition and surged to victory on the final 1.6km of the day and series.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUntil 400 metres from the line I was scared to look behind my shoulder,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0said Bergere, the 2022 ITU World Champion, at the finish.<\/b>\u00a0\u201cI knew Hayden would be right behind me, but I could hear my coach Tim Don saying you\u2019ve got this. And I have to thank Tim, my team and Matt Hauser today for giving me the Short Chutes, without the help of everyone I wouldn\u2019t have had the victory.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Wilde would finish 9secs back while Brit Alex Yee would come home in third to also secure bronze in the overall series. Aussie Matt Hauser and reigning Olympic champ, Norway\u2019s Kristian Blummenfelt, would complete the top five.<\/span><\/p>\n
