In December, Lisa de Speville, founder and director of AdventureLisa’s Forest Run moved to Parys. After a lovely lunch at the Old Imperial Inn in Venterskroon, with the hills of the Vredefort Dome meteorite impact crater as a backdrop, Lisa decided to move her Forest Run event with her. Her eyes had feasted more on the hills and kloofs than the meal.
Since January, Lisa has spent a lot of time in the area to scout old hiking trails, animal paths and rough vehicle tracks to create interesting routes that show off the charms of the area. There’s ascent and decent, rocky paths, rugged tracks and valleys and kloofs that are shelted from the sun by dense natural forest. Lisa has created three courses: 16km, 30km and 46km.
“The 16 kilometre route has diversity in terrain with both difficult and easy sections. The 30 kilometre route takes it up a notch with more distance and even more variety. But it is really the 46 kilometre route that will completely impress the runners. I thought I had a good feel for the vegetation and terrain of the area until I got to this section. It is even more and more and more than I expected,” Lisa says.
This new Forest Run takes place in the Vredefort Dome area, which is just ouside of the town of Parys. The event is based from the Old Imperial Inn in Venterskroon, a historic gold-mining town.
