Netball: BFNPL

The North West Flames became the fourth team to inflict pain to the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League defending champions, the Free State Crinums, when they beat them 54 -40 in the final match of the night.

Coming into this match, both teams were hoping for a win, to better their chances prior to the last round of matches and the players put everything they had into the match. The Crinums started slow, but they made good progress ten minutes into the match and this pushed them to a three points lead at the end of the first quarter.

Coming into second quarter, the Flames brought their A game into the match and even though the Crinums tried to catch up with them, it was not to be as they trailed throughout the match. At halftime, the Flames were 27-22 ahead. “Great confidence booster for my girls” said Flames’ coach Dorette Badenhorst. Badenhorst said they had prepared well for the match, knowing they were up against a strong and experienced side.

“We knew this was going to be a tough match, but a win was also something we were truly hoping for. The girls played like a unit and covered each other well. This was truly their best game by far.” added Badenhorst. In the earlier game, the Gauteng Fireballs continued where they left off last week as they thrashed the Kingdom Stars 67- 29 to maintain their second place standings.

The team coached by Elsje Gordaan hardly broke a sweat against their opponents, but even though that was the case, player of the match Zanele Vimbela said they were given a good challenge and they were able to see some of their mistakes, which they will work on before they face off against the Aloes tomorrow.
