Eye of Africa Golf Estate Golf Course Review

So the Everyday Golfer had a chance to play the Eye of Africa course. Having heard a lot about the course I was really looking forward to getting to grips with this fairly new course designed by the legendary Great White Shark, Greg Norman. In fact it is his first design in Africa. Having never played a Greg Norman course before I was interested to see how he approaches his course layout.

My first impressions were very promising. The Clubhouse/restaurant is brand new and a fantastic facility with everything one might need. The cloakrooms are a little small but otherwise fit the bill perfectly. There are also fantastic practice facilities around the clubhouse, with a driving range, large putting green and coaching bays.

The course itself is an interesting design. Many bunkers to keep you honest, but the critical thing at Eye of Africa for a good round is to keep your tee shots on the short stuff. The fairways are generous but the rough is waist high and finding your ball in there is a lottery. I personally had a great day off the tee box, but still spent plenty of time searching for my fellow playmate’s balls in that unforgiving stuff. Avoid it at all costs. Rather take a long iron or 3 wood off the tee than spray your driver into that hairy mess.

It is a fairly hilly course in places and I would recommend taking a cart. It also has the unusual feature that the halfway house is out on the course and not back at the clubhouse, so everyone starts off the first tee box on this setup.

What else can I say about Eye of Africa? It is located South of Johannesburg and it not a long drive from most directions. I really enjoyed my day here and would gladly accept another opportunity to tee it up at Eye of Africa.

My scariest hole – Number 5 – par 3 – Pretty hole with a demanding tee-shot especially if the wind is up.

My favourite hole – Number 3 – par 4 – Tight tee shot requires good accuracy but beautifully laid out.

Overall Experience rating by the Everyday Golfer: 9 out of 10.
