Dookie Downhill Race Report
Known by the locals skaters as The Shit Run, anyone who has skated Hillclimb Drive in Krugersdorp knows that it is one of the most technical hills for gravity racing in South Africa. With 3 hairpin corners, super slippery tarmac and a maximum speed of ± 80km/h, the hill is a skaters dream! No skater would say the hill is a “shit” one to skate, the name originates from the aroma that comes from the sewerage treatment plant located at the bottom at the bottom of the hill. Luckily the smell was not enough to keep competitors and spectators away for a weekend of racing on this epic hill.

On Saturday, practice runs began at 10:30am once all the riders were registered and suited up. Practice runs ran smoothly with no serious crashes and everyone getting plenty of time on the hill. Time trials began at 1pm where everyone had two chances to go against the clock, the best time of the two runs would seed them for Saturdays racing. After time trials, the top four qualifiers were put into a single 4 man heat for their respective categories to race it out for a R500 cash prize. Paul Du Plessis took the win for Downhill Skateboard, Franco Megannon for Street Luge and Marco Caromba for Classic Luge.
On Sunday we did warm up runs from 9am until 12 when the one-on-one racing began. Dookie Downhill 2013 was not only the first time in South Africa that duel format (2-man heats) was run, it was also the first time that a double elimination racing bracket was implemented. The duel format was great from a technical racing point of view since the chance of being crashed out by one competitor and losing to a slower competitor (as often happens in 4 or 6-man heats) was non-existent. The double elimination bracket meant that each rider would have a second chance at making it to the final rather than being eliminated after losing just one heat.
