On the back of a 6-0 thumping of University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of the Western Cape came to the City of Roses brimming with confidence, but fell 2-1 to a spirited CUT in Bloemfontein on Thursday night.
It was, CUT, who began the more dominant side, as the visitors were finding their feet early on. Sello Mokhele blasted an early free kick over the bar, right before Katleho Molakeng’s shot, in anger, got the crowd excited, but went just wide of the upright. A free header for UWC’s Thulani Mkosi only stayed out because of Neo Sebudi’s timely intervention.
CUT kept knocking for a goal, most notably through captain Morena Lehloa’s troubling long throws. They were to be rewarded for their persistence when Taole Rakgomo found himself unmarked in the box and calmly slotted in just before the break. UWC’s Lyle Hardenberg, who had been doing a stellar mopping job at the back, came to his team’s rescue when he cleared off the line.
Not to be denied a brace, Rakgomo volleyed in Sebudi’s pinpoint cross just after the break, to calm any nerves the home supporters may have had. CUT’s attempts to put the game to bed were denied by Renaldo Leaner’s defiant shot-stopping. On the other end, Ntsane added to his incisive ball distribution with timely saves.
A lapse in concentration from the home defence allowed UWC to pull a goal back when Josh Silent chipped over Ntsane. Herwel Clinton’s narrow miss nearly invoked a few strokes in the crowd. A scramble in the box, including a goal-line headed clearance from Hardenberg, nearly made it three for CUT. The home side were to hold on for a second win on the spin.
