Inspired by the Head 2 Head competition between @DirkVale & @MarcelSigg, regular contributor on La Liga matters, Ruan Marais decided to challenge @MarcelSigg to a Champions League version of the same!
RM: Shakhtar Donetsk 1 – 2 PSG
Unbeaten and top of the French league standings, PSG should build on their opening round win against a Shakhtar side that was torn apart by Madrid in round 1.
MS: Shakhtar Donetsk 1 – 2 PSG
It’s never easy to pick up points in Ukraine but high-flying big spenders PSG should manage a win.
Result: Shakhtar Donetsk 0 – 3 PSG
RM: Malmö 0 – 4 Real Madrid
Real Madrid has scored four or more in three matches so far this season, and expect them to continue that trend against Malmö.
MS: Malmö 0 – 4 Real Madrid
Madrid are one of the super powers, I was tempted to go higher than 4 goals.
Result: Malmö 0 – 2 Real Madrid
RM: Manchester United 3 – 1 Wolfsburg
United has found some consistency on attack with Anthony Martial, while Wolfsburg was demolished by Bayern the previous week in a 5 – 1 drubbing.
MS: Manchester United 2 – 0 Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg have lost their best player to City. United are finding some form and Martial looks promising. OT is not a place to visit when things aren’t going well for you.
Result: Manchester United 2 – 1 Wolfsburg
RM: CSKA Moscow 2 – 2 PSV Eindhoven
While neither team has had too many clean sheets, plenty of goals has been scored by both, and a high scoring match is expected.
MS: CSKA Moscow 1 – 0 PSV Eindhoven
Moscow is a horrible place to go, it’s not winter yet but there will be an icy reception for PSV. I don’t expect any freebies like the one’s United gave PSV.
Result: CSKA Moscow 3 – 2 PSV Eindhoven
RM: Astana 0 – 1 Galatasaray
The Turks were comfortably beaten by Atletico last time out, but should have enough to beat the new boys from Kazakhstan.
MS: Astana 0 – 1 Galatasaray
There’s just too much quality in the Turkish side to lose in Kazakhstan. Tough match but Gala to prevail.
Result: Astana 2 – 2 Galatasaray
RM: Atletico Madrid 2 – 0 Benfica
Atletico are replicating the form that saw them win La Liga in 2014, while the Benfica squad has been let depleted by constant transfer. A comfortable home win for Atleti.
MS: Atletico Madrid 2 – 0 Benfica
I’m not the biggest fan of Simeone but Griezman is firing on all cylinders and they are effective. Portuguese football isn’t what it was at it’s peak either.
Result: Atletico Madrid 1 – 2 Benfica
RM: Borussia Mönchengladbach 0 – 2 Manchester City
Expect Manchester City to bounce back from their disappointing opening round defeat, while Gladbach are still in shock due to the resignation of their successful coach Lucien Favre.
MS: Borussia Mönchengladbach 1 – 1 Manchester City
City just can’t get it together in Europe, I don’t think the Germans have what it takes to win but then neither do City.
Result: Borussia Mönchengladbach 1 – 2 Manchester City
RM: Juventus 2 – 1 Sevilla
Juventus has found form after a struggling start in Serie A, while Sevilla has proved to be extremely inconsistent so far this season.
MS: Juventus 3 – 1 Sevilla
Another strong showing from the Italian champions after cleaning up City in the previous round.
Result: Juventus 2 – 0 Sevilla
RM: Barcelona 3 – 0 Bayer Leverkusen
Three consecutive losses in the German league for Leverkussen leaves them in the bottom half of the table, and expect Barca to compound their misery in round two.
MS: Barcelona 2 – 0 Bayer Leverkusen
Messi, Suarez and Neymar .. just too much for Leverkusen in my eyes.
Result: Barcelona 2 – 1 Bayer Leverkusen
RM: BATE Borisov 0 – 2 Roma
Their draw against Barcelona was one of the performances of the round, and the Italians should secure their first win against BATE in round 2.
MS: BATE Borisov 0 – 1 Roma
Good result for Roma last time out. BATE are useful at home but I think Roma are too good for the eastern Europeans.
Result: BATE Borisov 3 – 2 Roma
RM: Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 – 2 Dynamo Kyiv
The Isreali champions are out of their depth in a very strong pool, and last season’s Europa league finalists should secure an easy win.
MS: Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 – 1 Dynamo Kyiv
I’m not expecting any fireworks from Maccabi after Chelsea ripped them apart but at home they might park the bus.
Result: Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 – 2 Dynamo Kyiv
RM: Porto 1 – 2 Chelsea
Despite all the off field drama plaguing Chelsea at the moment, their playing form has improved and Jose Mourinho should secure a win against his former club.
MS: Porto 2 – 1 Chelsea
Chelsea are plagued by a raft of issues, sooner or later they will translate to on field performances.
Result: Porto 2 – 1 Chelsea
RM: Lyon 2 – 1 Valencia
Both sides have endured troubling starts to their season, but with rumours of discontent in the Valencia dressing room, Lyon should capitalize against an inexperienced Spanish side.
MS: Lyon 1 – 1 Valencia
Neither side has done enough to convince me they can win, easy kop-out perhaps but a draw for me.
Result: Lyon 0 – 1 Valencia
RM: Zenit Saint Petersburg 2 – 0 Gent
The Russians have all the fire power they need to overcome Gent, an easy victory at home for Zenit.
MS: Zenit Saint Petersburg 2 – 0 Gent
The Russian team showed they can score goals in the previous round with Valencia. I just can’t see Gent being able to stop them at home.
Result: Zenit 2 – 1 Gent
RM: Bayern 3 Dinamo 0
Bayern Munich have won all their matches so far this season, scoring on average more than three goals per game, expect them to continue that trend at home against Dinamo Zagreb
MS: Bayern Munchen 2 – 0 Dinamo Zagreb
Who can stop the Muller – Lewandowski combination? I’d put money on it not being Zagreb.
Result: Bayern 5 – 0 Zagreb
RM: Arsenal 2 – 1 Olympiacos
A must win home game for Arsenal to get off the mark before facing Bayern in consecutive rounds, the Gunners will be relying on the in form Alexis Sanchez to see off the Greeks.
MS: Arsenal 2 – 1 Olympiacos
A poor performance away to Zagreb with the match against Chelsea probably splitting Wenger’s attention in the previous round. It’s now or never to get back on track with a home match.
Result: Arsenal 2 – 3 Olympiacos
RM 10 : 11 MS
Scoring: 1 point for correct winner (or draw); 2 points for exact score.
