Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries rallied to third place overall at the Polokwane Motor Rally in Limpopo on Saturday, their second consecutive podium finish following on their success in the Western Cape. With their podium and a top-five result for Enzo Kuun and Douglas Judd, the Volkswagen Sasolracing team produced two top-five finishers.
For Kuun and Judd that fifth place does not do justice to their performance in Polokwane. They were 17th following stage one after suffering a puncture. They clawed their way up to eighth place by the overnight finish on Friday and were within 24 seconds of fourth position by the end of the event.
“It was a strong weekend out on the rally stages for the Volkswagen Sasolracing team,” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “Conditions were extremely demanding with many potential hazards. The team tackled the challenge head on and produced a good result.”
A tree stump brought the rally of Henk Lategan and Barry White to a sudden stop in the very first stage with damage to their steering system. They returned to action on day two and showed good form with stages times amongst the top five competitors, even winning stage nine. Unfortunately the damage from day one came back to haunt them and they were unable to finish the event.
“Henk and Barry were clearly on form to produce a good result at this rally,” says Rowe. “They showed the pace and potential to be amongst the leaders. Luck was just not on their side at this event and, like Gugu and Carl, they were forced to retire before the finish line.”
The Volkswagen Sasolracing team contest the final round of the 2013, the Garden Route Rally, on Friday and Saturday 15 and 16 November.
