Last time the SuperGP brigade went anti-clockwise around the Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga was back in June 2015. On that occasion Mathew Scholtz (ETR Nashua Yamaha R1) took two comfortable wins from eventual champion Clint Seller on the NeoLife Africa Yamaha R1.
On Saturday 20 February 2016 the duo, joined by more than a dozen other riders, will be back in action for the opening round of the 2016 SuperGP Champions Trophy.
Scholtz has a new team mate this year. He will be joined in the ETR Nashua squad by Themba Khumalo who will become the first black rider to compete in the premier class in South Africa’s national motorcycle championship. Joining them on a Yamaha R1 will be Brandon Goode who will be campaigning in Linex Yamaha colours this season.
There will be a number of BMW S1000RR mounted riders, supported by BMW Motorrad, looking to stop Yamaha claiming another crown. Chief among those will be veteran Lance Isaacs who has now put his own team together. Joining him on similar bikes will be Greg Gildenhuys, Nicolas Grobler, Garrick Vlok and fellow Capetonian Ronald Slammet.
It won’t be just a Yamaha and BMW show though. Uncle Andy Racing has provided a Suzuki GSXR 1000 for AJ Venter to show his skills in the top flight while Brent Harran will be back on his Kawasaki ZX10R.
In the Super600 class the fight is likely to be just as fierce as it was last year. 2015 championship runner-up Michael White has moved up to the SuperGP class but champion Steven Odendaal and third place Adolf Boshoff are back. Boshoff has joined up with Anassis Racing and will be on a NeoLife Africa Yamaha R6 while Odendaal, who remains on a Yamaha R6, will run his own team.
In addition to their SuperGP entry, Uncle Andy Racing have two Suzuki GSXR 600s in the Super600 class. The bikes will be ridden by Blaze Baker and Darien Kayser. A number of other familiar faces will be back including Dylan Barnard and the only lady racer to stand on a national motorcycle circuit racing podium last year, Nicole van Aswegen.
The SuperJunior class, for youngsters riding identical KTM 390 bikes, sees the return of a number of familiar faces. While inaugural champion William Friend has moved on to compete in Europe, Dominic Doyle, Tyreece Robert and Brandon Staffen should all line up on the grid at Red Star. They will be joined by Zante and Ricardo Otto, Chase Hulscher, Gareth Gehlig and Jared Schultz.
The SuperMasters Interprovincial Challenge, which will run with the SuperGP class, should provide some tight racing. Jacques van Wyngaardt certains knows his way around Red Star but he will have competition from the likes of Justin Gillesen, Etienne Nelson, Evert Stofberg and Johnny Kriger amongst others.
In addition to the national classes there will be a number of regional classes running on the day. They include BOTTS, 250 Cup, Formula Xtreme and the Breakfast Run.
Tickets are available from TicketPro for R80.00 or can be purchased at Red Star Raceway on the day. Children under 12 admitted free of charge.
As was the case in 2015, Gas Sports will be harnessing the generosity of the biking community for the benefit of charities in the area of the circuits the SuperGP Champions Tour visits. In exchange for a tin of food spectators arriving at the circuit before 10h00 on race day by motorcycle will be granted free admission to the track.
For those unable to make it to the track all the race action will be streamed live on www.supergp.co.za on race day.
